A global perspective is gaining momentum on health agendas around the world. Significant resources have been directed to the creation of specific departments and institutes dedicated to global health at major universities in North America and Europe and to the launch of billion-dollar government initiatives and sophisticated nongovernmental organizations. With historical roots in areas such as tropical medicine and public health, global health is a domain that bridges research and practice with the goal of achieving equity in health care and health outcomes for all people worldwide. 1
